Nation’s first full-scale LRT Toyama Light Rail / Toyama Port Line

Nation’s first full-scale LRT Toyama Light Rail / Toyama Port Line

Toyama Light Rail Co. Ltd. started its service on the Toyama Port Line on April 29 2006, aiming to offer a locally based, safe, convenient, and comfortable transportation system, which would also be people-friendly and environmentally-friendly.

This line was a local train line operated by JR West Japan until 2005. Toyama City took over the line, improved the service level by converting it to LRT (light rail transit), and reopened it as a passenger-friendly public transportation. The operation concept is “public facility and private management.” That is, Toyama City bears costs of the facility construction and maintenance and the third sector railway, Toyama Light Rail Inc. is in charge of operation of the line.

With the opening of LRT, service was improved due to things such as increase in train frequency, improvement of service hours, and the introduction of flat fare (\200).
