Toyama Clay Dolls

Toyama has been a center for making clay dolls since the end of the Edo Period (1603-1867) when Yasujiro Hirose, a potter in Nagoya, presented a clay doll of Tenin Gagyuu to Toshiyasu Maeda, the lord of the Toyama feudal domain. About seventy types of Toyama clay dolls are still being made today. There is a center and shop for clay dolls in the Toyama Municipal Folkcraft Village.
